When PNG is the right choice
PNG stores images without lossy compression. Convert HEIC to PNG when the image contains sharp edges that JPG compression would smear: screenshots of apps and websites, scanned documents, diagrams, UI mockups, logos, or photos of whiteboards and printed text. PNG is also the format many design tools, print shops and document systems explicitly request.
For regular photographs PNG is rarely the best pick — files become very large because photographic noise is hard to compress losslessly. A 4 MB HEIC photo can become a 25 MB PNG. If you just need a compatible photo format, use HEIC to JPG; if you need a small file for the web, use HEIC to WEBP.

Correct — and that is by design. PNG has no quality setting because it is lossless: the output always contains exactly the pixels of the decoded HEIC. The only way to make a PNG smaller is to reduce its dimensions, which you can do with the image compressor.
HEIC to PNG questions
Is PNG better than JPG for photos?
Usually not. PNG is lossless, so a 12-megapixel photo can easily become 20–30 MB. PNG shines for screenshots, graphics, logos and any image with sharp text or flat colors.
Does PNG keep transparency from HEIC?
Regular iPhone photos have no transparency, so there is nothing to keep. If your HEIC contains an alpha channel (rare), the PNG output preserves it.
Why is my PNG so much larger than the HEIC file?
HEIC uses strong lossy compression; PNG stores every pixel exactly. A larger file is expected and is the price of lossless output. If size matters, convert to JPG or WEBP instead.
