Why convert HEIC to WEBP?
If the destination of your photo is a website — a product photo in a webshop, an image in a blog post, a portfolio — WEBP is usually the best target format. It compresses photos around 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, is supported by every modern browser, and is what performance tools such as Google Lighthouse and PageSpeed Insights actively recommend.
iPhone photos are also far larger than a web page needs: 4032×3024 pixels, while most content areas are at most 1200–1600 pixels wide. For the best results, convert to WEBP here and then run the file through the image compressor with a max dimension of around 1600 px — together that routinely turns a 3 MB HEIC into a 150 KB web image.
A note on Safari
All browsers can show WEBP, but encoding support differs. This tool checks the actual output: if your browser cannot produce real WEBP (older Safari versions), you get a clear error instead of a mislabeled file. In that case use Chrome, Edge or Firefox, or fall back to JPG.

Which browsers can convert to WEBP?
Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Chromium-based browsers can encode WEBP. Safari can display WEBP but cannot always create it; if encoding fails, the tool shows an error instead of silently giving you a PNG.
Is WEBP smaller than JPG?
For most photos, yes — typically 25–35% smaller at comparable visual quality. That is why WEBP is the standard recommendation of page-speed tools like Lighthouse.
Where should I not use WEBP?
Some older e-mail clients, office software and upload forms do not accept WEBP. For anything that must work absolutely everywhere, JPG remains the safe option.
